Aims and objectives

Thalidomide, a sedative drug first synthesized in 1953, caused a variety of birth defects whicht led to the death of about 40% of the affected children and multiple malformations in surviving children. Today, about 2,500 grown-up thalidomide receivers still live in Germany.

Early post-mortem studies showed multiple cardiovascular birth defects caused by Thalidomide, but there are no current studies examining adult Thalidomide receivers for vascular malformations. So far there are only scarce reports about adult Thalidomide receivers having vascular malformations.

Recent studies were the first to identify inhibition of angiogenesis as the main reason for Thalidomide’s teratogenic effect (1).

Our study analyses the presence of vascular malformations in adults receiving Thalidomide during embryonically develompent using NCEMRA.
